Timeline of Clocks
Over the years we have taken clocks for granted.  Now-a-days it seems like
our biggest decision is to select the type of clock we want.

But just for a moment in time, let’s review a few facts about clocks.
* 5,000 years ago, Sumerians in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley in today’s Iraq
had a calendar that divided the year into 30 day months and divided the day
into 12 hour periods (each corresponded to 2 of our hours.
* 5000 to 6000 years ago, civilizations in the Middle East & North Africa
initiated clock making as opposed to calendar making.
* Around 3500 BC Obelisks were built. Their moving shadows formed a kind of
sundial.
* Around 1500 BC an Egyptian shadow clock also called a sundial, was
coming into use to measure the passage of hours.
* In 1504 the first portable timepieces was invented in Germany.
* In 1577 the minute hand was invented.
* In 1656, the pendulum was invented.
* In 1787 the first ringing bell alarm clock was invented in Concord, NH.
However, this clock could only ring at 4 am.
* In 1878 a wind up alarm clock that could be set for any time was patented.

It is interesting that most of us have come to depend so highly on a clock that
we automatically expect to be accurate.  Our lives have become so hectic that
every minute counts because we have things scheduled so heavily and right
down to the minute.

Imagine living just 150 years ago when clocks were not that accurate.
Because the clocks weren’t very accurate, the people’s lives were a lot calmer
and less hectic.  Strict schedules could not be adhered to because there was
no accurate way to do it.

And now-a-days, a lot of us rely on our cell phones for the accurate time.  And
we take it for granted.

Having the correct time seems like such a small thing to us today. But take a
minute (pardon the pun) to appreciate the large variety of accurate clocks we
have available to us.
